Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw was born on March 23, 1953, in Banglore, to Gujarati parents from a middle-class family. Her father, Rasendra Mazumdar, held the position of head brewmaster at United Breweries.

She had wanted to be a doctor since she was a youngster, but she couldn’t receive a scholarship. She was the sole female student enrolled in a brewery course in 1974, and she graduated first in her class. Kiran married John Shaw in 1989 when he was 44 years old. Kiran commenced her professional journey as a brewing trainee at Carlton and United Breweries in Melbourne. Kiran Mazumdar finished her apprenticeship at Carlton and United Breweries. She also worked as a trainee maltster for Barrett Brothers and Burston in Australia.

After returning to India, she worked as a technical consultant for Jupiter Breweries in Calcutta, and after getting some experience there, she worked as a Technical Manager for Standard Maltings Company in Baroda. She chose to advance her career in Bangalore or Delhi but was advised that “it’s a man’s business” and that women would not be hired as master brewers in India.

She began seeking work abroad and was offered a position in Scotland. Before her migration, Mazumdar was already acquainted with Leslie Auchincloss, the individual who established Biocon Biochemicals Limited in Cork, Ireland. His company created enzymes that were utilized in the brewing, food packaging, and textile industries.

He was in search of an Indian businessperson who could assist him in setting up a branch of his company in India. Kiran worked for the company, and it was a once-in-a-lifetime chance for her. Leslie provided her with training to become a manager within his company. With an initial investment of 10,000 INR and after learning more about the company’s operations and sales, Kiran traveled to India and started working for Biocon in a leased garage in Bangalore.

Kiran joined Biocon in 1978 and encountered several hurdles due to her youth, gender, and unproven business concept. Because no bank would lend her money, finance was a major concern.

After securing her first round of funding, she set up her inaugural factory in a nearby 3000-square-foot shed. At the outset, the company focused on extracting papain (an enzyme derived from papaya which has meat tenderizing properties) and isinglass (obtained from tropical catfish and used in beer clarification).

Within a year of its creation, Biocon India was the first Indian company to manufacture enzymes and transport them to the United States and Europe. Kiran put her first year’s earnings into a 20-acre property, with hopes to expand in the future. Kiran’s innovative thinking and ideas helped Biocon India grow from an enzyme manufacturing company to a fully integrated biopharmaceutical enterprise.
